So my twenty-year high school reunion is coming up this summer (how on earth did that happen?!), and for the past several years I’ve been excitedly planning to go back to Idaho for it. Unfortunately, due to a number of circumstances more or less out of our control, we’ve had to shelve those plans. We’ve crunched and re-crunched the numbers, and keep coming to the same conclusion: it’s really out of our reach.
I’m disappointed, of course, but I’m not devastated. I think the last couple of months of “will we or won’t we” were harder on me than the disappointment of the actual decision. Still, I was really looking forward to swimming in the Clearwater River this July, and I hate like hell not to take my kids to see the fireworks and the Border Days parade in my hometown on the Fourth. And worst, of course, is missing all of the friends and family I’d been looking forward to catching up with. Bummer.
You can try to skype into the reunion – all of my Irish friends always talk about calls into weddings, holidays, etc. Even my best friend had an open phone for a cousin in Australia at her wedding in 2006.
With a laptop and free Wifi, it should be pretty easy to set up… if you can stay awake 😉
*hugs*
I know what you mean about the number crunching thing. I’ve come to the hard realization that with 3 kids we aren’t going to get to the US any time soon, and I’m really feeling a need to get there at some point soon. I don’t often get homesick, but right now I am.
I know how you’re feeling and I’m so sorry!
You could always go on your own for a short visit? Sans kids? And take the kids another time? Perhaps when they are a bit older and will remember more? 🙂
🙁
Sorry to hear that 🙁 Kids sometimes fly cheaper and under 2s for free but not with all airlines so I guess it can cost quite a lot.
Jana — that’s an idea!
I’ve thought a little about not taking the entire family, but I’m not sure my anxiety would allow such a thing. Also, I’d have to take the baby no matter what, and being on my own with an infant might not translate into the most fun trip ever. Plus, Tage would probably disown me if I went without him!
There’s just so darn many of us … last time I checked, airfare alone for all of us from here to Houston was in the $10,000 range. Eek.
Darn it all….wish I could wave a fairy wand and make it happen for you. That is one hefty airfare..woah!
That really sucks! I’m so sorry! Yeah airfare is horrid this year! We paid over 3000 usd just for Tor and Alex. We have to wait to get my ticket.
Very true on the prices… Going from Skelleftea near the dates you want ends up being close to 70,000 kr… while going from stockholm is a bit under 60,000 kr. (with your family… if you can… DRIVE the first bit, Gas included it has got to cost less than 10,000 kr!) 😉
I want to get home this summer as well. But we’ll see how that goes. My husband decided to fly off to the US with a bunch of friends a couple of weeks ago, leaving me behind. So we’ll see what we’ve got left in money.
