Once we’d got the new table in place, it was time to start looking for new chairs. Obviously. I’m not a particular fan of the chairs you see in that picture, but they served their function well enough for a number of years and I never felt especially motivated to replace them. They look so wrong with the new table, though, that it put me in a great big hurry to switch them out.
Since last summer, when Olof started building the table, I had been toying with the idea of doing mismatched dining chairs to go with it. I really like the look, plus it can be a lot more affordable than buying a set of matching chairs. I had planned to let everyone choose his or her own chair, something I thought would be cute and quirky, but ultimately my inner control freak wouldn’t let it happen and I wound up choosing all of these chairs in one go last weekend at the Salvation Army thrift store. In case you can’t see it well, there are two each of four different chair styles. I’m happier with the result than I thought I might be. The thing I don’t like is that the floor more or less matches the table and chairs, giving the whole thing a monochromatic look that doesn’t really flip my switch, but what are you gonna do?
I love the look of the wood and if you use a runner or a table cloth or chair pads it will rev. it up a bit.
Love the chairs, too. You could put an oriental rug or some modern area rug (whatever floats your boat) under the table. One that wouldn’t show spills! Has everyone “claimed” a chair…or will they be willing to switch it up now and again. I remember when I was a kid, we did all seem to stay in the same place at the table for some reason!
Thanks! I’m glad I’m not the only one who likes it (Lydia’s not a fan)! 🙂
I heard somewhere about painting a faux rug on the floor, and I’m really in love with that idea … if I can convince Olof, that is.
I absolutely love the table and the mismatched chairs!! (Nothing in my house matches) Love the light wood also, this is just a suggestion from what is in my kitchen. A solid black or dark color under the table would make that table and floors pop!! The only thing is is black shows everything dropped or spilled that is light color. But I love the light wood and black appliances in my kitchen.
I would paint each one a different, bright color. Maybe let the kis choose what color to paint their chair? Then everything wouldn’t “match”. Just sayin’ 🙂
Loved the painted floor idea. Poor Olof…another project!
