Toddler versus hot tea

She’s fine, truly, but I can’t believe I let such a stupid thing happen. 🙁

Yrsa has always been really good about leaving hot things alone — just a warning will steer her away from anything that we tell her is hot. After five kids, though, I really should know better than to trust the little ones. Friday afternoon she pulled my cup of hot tea off the table and onto her chest. I pulled her shirt off her immediately and ran cold water on her, then put a cold compress on her chest while I called the doctor’s office. I took her in and even though it was blistering some, they said it was superficial and should heal fine. They bandaged her up and told us to come in for a follow-up on Tuesday morning.

It looks HORRIBLE, but weirdly, it doesn’t seem to bother her at all (I’d post a picture, but trust me, it’d bother the hell out of you). She’s been downright cheerful and hasn’t complained at all about it hurting. The bandaging is bugging her, but we put a tight-ish shirt on her and she’s pretty much leaving it alone. The doctor said to give her acetaminophen and/or ibuprofen if she was in a lot of pain, but so far we haven’t had to give her anything. We’re supposed to change the dressing tonight, so we’ll get a look at how things are coming along.

I’m trying not to beat myself up too much, but we all know how that goes. I guess I’ll just leave it by saying it was not my finest parenting moment.

  1. Don’t beat yourself up at all! You are a human mommy! With 5 kids who are all alive and well! She won’t even remember it happening!
